WW+P selected to provide design services on four new London Underground stations as part of Bakerloo Line Extension
WW+P has been appointed by Transport for London (TfL) to deliver the feasibility study on four new stations as part of the Bakerloo Line Extension (BLE) project.
Work on the feasibility study will be carried out over the next eight months, with the four new stations – Burgess Park, Old Kent Road, New Cross Gate, Lewisham – expected to be operational by 2040 according to TfL, subject to planning and funding approval. WW+P is lead architect for the project, focusing on the design aspects of the study. We will be working with AECOM, the world’s trusted infrastructure consulting firm, responsible for all engineering matters, including civil, structural, mechanical and geotechnical engineering, as well as stakeholder engagement and consent.
Our design work will provide tangible transport connectivity to a traditionally under-served part of London. This is an historic opportunity to support growth in one of London's most ambitious Opportunity Areas, delivering the new homes and jobs this Government continues to highlight the demand for. The extension of the Bakerloo Line brings greater connectivity to the area and provides opportunity to enhance it further through new town centres that include community hubs, workspaces and homes. With further interventions the road can also become a flagship Healthy Street project for Transport for London, with wide pavements, flexible activity zones, cycleways and electric buses. We're pleased that our work could see the progression of one of the most significant next programmes of regeneration in the region centred around transport-oriented development.

Unlike most Underground lines, the Bakerloo line currently terminates in Zone 1 in central London, with its final stop at Elephant & Castle. This has been the case since the line opened in 1906, with various proposed extensions over the past century. The current proposal will see the line run to Lewisham in Southeast London, improving accessibility and reducing journey times to the city centre.
AECOM and WW+P have worked together on a number of station design schemes globally, including the RIBA National Award-winning Paddington Elizabeth Line Station and the Crossrail 2 proposal in the UK, along with the Melbourne Metro Rail project in Australia. We have also directly appointed London Bridge Associates (LBA) to provide specialist constructability and fire safety input for the Bakerloo Line Extension feasibility study.
“We are delighted to be working on this project, connecting southeast London with much-needed transport links to the heart of the city,” says Shadi Shekarrizi, Rail Director for London and the Southeast at AECOM. “The benefits of this project to these areas will be tremendous and will be felt by communities across Lewisham, Southwark and beyond, potentially providing a £1.5bn boost to the economy each year. These new stations will support regeneration across these areas, incentivising new housing development while reducing traffic congestion and overcrowding on local public transportation, and improving air quality.”
