Spectacular Town Hall station set to open ahead of schedule
Construction crews are making remarkable progress as they forge ahead with the creation of the Town Hall Station underground concourse beneath the bustling City Square. Proudly part of the transformative Metro Tunnel Project this remarkable achievement is now set to greet passengers in 2025, a whole year ahead of schedule.
Passengers will be greeted by a vast expanse upon entering the station from the City Square, an open concourse of grand proportions spanning an impressive 19 metres in width. This expansive space sits directly beneath Melbourne's City Square, a space that will be returned to the public as an open canvas for vibrant events and communal gatherings. Surrounded by iconic city landmarks such as St Paul's Cathedral and Melbourne Town Hall, the revitalised City Square will serve as a vibrant hub, celebrating heritage and modernity.
The state-of-the-art Town Hall Station will serve as an impressive gateway to some of Melbourne's most beloved destinations, including Federation Square and the nearby bustling Southbank precinct. Within the station passengers will be struck by the cathedral-like arched ceilings, an architectural marvel unrivalled in its scale in the area. Moreover, the station will boast some of the world's widest platforms, offering an extraordinary travel experience for all who pass through.
The Metro Tunnel will herald a new era of rail travel in Melbourne, vastly improving the way commuters journey throughout the city. With the capacity to accommodate over half a million additional passengers during peak hours each week, this transformative project will alleviate congestion, enhance accessibility, and enrich the lives of countless Victorians.

We’re getting on with the infrastructure projects our state needs, boosting the economy, creating more than 50,000 jobs and transforming the way Victorians travel. The spectacular Town Hall Station concourse will take people from City Square above to turn-up-and-go train services to the city and suburbs.
Town Hall station is one of five new stations being designed and delivered by Hassell, Weston Williamson + Partners, and RSHP, as part of the CYP Design and Construction Joint Venture.
