Byford Station becomes Western Australia's first train station to achieve a 6 Star Green Star Design Review Rating

This major sustainability milestone gives the station the highest rating under the Green Building Council of Australia’s Railways V1.1 Rating tool and represents world leadership in sustainability. 

The rating is a result of comprehensive, independent verification across multiple sustainability criteria including management practices, indoor environmental quality, energy efficiency, transport, water use, materials, land use and ecology, emissions reduction and innovation.

Key sustainability features of the station include: 

  • the installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) systems capable of generating 100 kW of electricity with future provisions for battery storage 
  • quality indoor environments, windbreaks, shading and rain protection and maximum natural light to create bright, inviting spaces 

The project is also exceeding recycled content targets for concrete used, further demonstrating a commitment to sustainable practices.

Our Byford Rail Extension project is a crucial project of the METRONET program, aiming to extend the electric rail service from Armadale to Byford. Stations and their precincts play a vital role in people’s lives; the approach we took combines user experience, practical necessities, cost-effectiveness, and a commitment to crafting a built environment that respects the local culture and surroundings. The functional aspect was designed to ensure a smooth, safe, and user-friendly experience for passengers – promoting spaciousness and simplicity.

The design of both stations is heavily influenced by linear qualities of the landscape in Western Australia, including the geological layers and natural patterns in the area such as hills, rock formations, water, and wind. The design seeks to celebrate and integrate these natural features into the station architecture and surrounding public areas, with the goal of converting the precinct into a civic community hub, encouraging future development in both Armadale and Byford. The stations create a smooth transition between indoor and outdoor spaces; allowing natural light to filter through.

Byford Station's 6 Star Green Star Design Review Rating aligns with sustainability targets set out under the METRONET Sustainability Strategy.
