People-focused
One of the busiest on stations on London’s transport network, South Kensington acts as a gateway to a world-famous cultural quarter and popular tourist destinations. The upgrade works provide increased capacity and step-free access throughout the station, improving accessibility, passenger distribution and wayfinding. In doing so the passenger experience is transformed matching the high-quality public realm and surrounding historic structures.
Inventive
Our design holistically addresses the capacity upgrade requirements with minimal disruption to the operational station. The works are carefully structured to enable an over-station residential development that provides funding for this essential upgrade project.
WW+P’s design will make a considerable contribution to enhancing the user experience in the station. The designs are sympathetic to the heritage significance of the station, with sight lines and scale that restore a sense of the grandeur of the original station, without pastiche.

Responsible
The design preserves, enhances and celebrates the station’s listed heritage assets including John Fowler’s Grade II listed revetment wall within the passenger environment. Demolition is minimised, along with the extent of new structures. Dedicated landscape bays with Sustainable Urban Drainage are incorporated in walls of the new east bound platform lowing the flood rate and reducing the transport of pollution into the water environment.
The proposals now offer the opportunity to provide a real enhancement to this designated heritage asset. The simplified and contemporary design approach is welcomed.
