People-focused
Our multi-modal transport hub and railway bridge reconnects disparate parts of Riga for commuters and pedestrians, and transforms a congested traffic hot spot into a harmonious public realm. We provided uninterrupted level and traffic-free pedestrian access between Riga Central Station and Riga’s Old Town, with a new public park, step-free pedestrian access to Riga’s riverfront, and a fully integrated multi-modal transport hub, delivering easy and intuitive transfers.
Inventive
As part of the Riga Central Station renovation, we designed a large roof enclosure that echoes both the design of the historic Daugava railway bridge and the Central Market Hall roofs that border the site. The roof vaults are a series of timber arch ribs made from composite glued-laminated timber sections and engineered timber components. Lighting, information systems and signage are suspended from the roof structure allowing maximum platform space for passengers.
Responsible
The Janvara Street Park crossing creates a place for everyone to meet; an urban mixer, where all routes feed in, from the station, waterfront, market and old town. Additional amenities and commercial spaces created beneath the railway viaduct further enhance the social inclusion. New green public spaces increase the local biodiversity and provide new public amenities.
