People-focused

Our Elizabeth Line station has transformed the passenger experience at Paddington, making the station easier to move around. We created a highly visible entrance plaza, which takes take passengers either onto the Elizabeth Line station concourse and platforms below, or into the mainline station through a series of new entrance portals.

Inventive

Instead of tunnelling, we used the box station construction technique to bring daylight and natural ventilation deep into the station, which even allows passengers on the platforms to look directly upwards to street level. This required complex engineering, and the end result certainly matches the epic grandeur of Brunel’s historic station.

The jewel in Crossrail's crown.

Julian Robinson, Head of Architecture, Crossrail

Responsible

The station’s gigantic props, columns and ‘lily pad’ light fittings are examples of how we combined robust engineering with careful detailing to ensure Paddington will last for generations. We tucked services out of sight, and used brick, concrete, stone and bronze to create inspiring spaces that can accommodate future changes.

Through its rigorous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to sustainability, this station stands as a beacon of inspiration, setting a precedent for future transport developments.
