People-focused

The Ely Area Capacity Enhancement programme upgrades the railway allowing more trains to run through Ely. This upgrade involved the removal of level crossings and introducing new pedestrian bridges to aid safe pedestrian movement. The bridges at Cutter, Common Muckhill and Kiln Lane not only met the stringent infrastructure requirements but contributed positively to the local community and respected the sensitive landscape.

Inventive

Working in these sensitive sites over the River Great Ouse, close to Ely Marina and on the Ely Pits and Meadows Site of Special Scientific Interest required a contextual approach. Our Kiln Lane Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge offer an opportunity to design a bridge which touched the ground lightly with new ways for the local community to enjoy the landscape with views toward Ely Cathedral.

Responsible

The project supports sustainable, long-term economic growth through better connectivity and reliability for passenger services while meeting the demand for more rail freight between the Port of Felixstowe, the West Midlands and the North. Our bridges demonstrate that sensitive and contextual design can provide benefits to local communities that leave a lasting positive legacy.
