People-focused
Charing Cross Station acts as a gateway into London’s West End, where many of the city’s major public galleries, tourist attractions, and theatres are concentrated. The aim of the project is to transform the historic site into a modern station environment that provides greater passenger amenities and a higher quality passenger experience. Key interventions include a pedestrianised station forecourt, a civic scale station entrance and a new public retail mezzanine, all designed to make the station better for people.
Inventive
The vehicle-dominated forecourt is transformed into a generous pedestrianised entrance environment; improving safety and accessibility for passengers whilst creating a new public space in the heart of the city. The existing heritage features of the station are maintained and enhanced, with new additions designed to sensitively integrate into the existing fabric rather than require extensive demolition work.
Responsible
Component-driven design, incorporating dry-construction techniques, is used for new structures to reduce on site construction time and minimise disruption to passengers when upgrades are taking place. This approach to design reduces concrete use and enables disassembly and re-use rather than demolition at the end of the project lifespan.
